Project Summary

The USD 52 million sustainable college facility on Ithaca College’s campus features a 130,000 square-foot field house with a 180-foot tall tower for natural ventilation and cooling, and a 35,000 square-foot aquatics pavilion. The complex geometry of the field house and tower, and the late change in project plan from two phases to one, adding the pavilion design for a combined deliverable, required Korda/Nemeth to reconsider its structural, architectural, and mechanical design decisions for a more efficient layout. To coordinate and overcome these design challenges, Korda/Nemeth needed integrated engineering and modeling tools.

To accommodate the engineering challenges designing the field house and tower, Korda/Nemeth separated the design into two structural models using Bentley’s RAM Structural System, and with RAM Elements (formerly RAM Advanse), performed supplemental analysis to ensure design loads were properly distributed. When the aquatics pavilion was added late in the document construction phase for the field house, Korda/Nemeth used 3D modeling to accelerate the coordination of revising the mechanical systems in each structure. Bentley’s integrated and interoperable software enabled the team to optimize the facility’s layout for a sustainable design.

Bentley software was critical in accommodating project changes and saved time revising and coordinating the design of the structural, architectural, and mechanical systems, enabling the team to produce and provide 3D drawings to the contractor prior to construction. The conflicts resolved using Bentley tools resulted in in fewer requests for information during construction, saving time and money. Using Bentley’s integrated engineering tools, Korda/Nemeth quickly designed the complex geometry of the natural ventilation tower, field house, and aquatics pavilion, achieving LEED Gold certification for the facility.

Korda/Nemeth used RAM Structural System to design the field house using two structural models and RAM Elements to supplement design load analysis to ensure accurate results. The link between the two Bentley software programs proved invaluable to this analysis approach. Using Bentley 3D modeling tools enabled the team to efficiently coordinate the design changes in the mechanical spaces and identify the conflicts between the mechanical and structural systems, improving the layout and overall appearance of the energy-efficient space.
