    132 kV Substation

    Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India

Project Summary

Power Transmission Corporation of Uttarakhand retained iSAT Networks Engineers (iSAT) as the EPC contractor for a 132-kilovolt distribution substation in Dehradun, India. The INR 114.4 million project had a total capacity of 80 million volt-amperes (MVA) using two transformers of 40 MVA each. The traditional 2D design approach for substations in India required numerous revisions before arriving at final plans. On-site implementation frequently resulted in arbitration over undetected clashes.

iSAT’s intelligent 3D modeling approach using Bentley software offered a solution. The 3D layouts made clash detection and clearance checking easier, and enabled visualization to speed up the plan submission and approval process. Final plans were produced in less time and with fewer revisions. In a seismic zone with extreme weather, iSAT carried out structural analysis and design in STAAD.Pro to ensure that electrical equipment was properly supported by steel structures and their foundations.

The intelligent models allowed iSAT to produce highly accurate and automated bills of materials, purchase order lists, job cost estimates, and other reports. The automated process ensured any design revisions were reflected in the reports. Overall, iSAT saw a 60% reduction in design revisions, a 40% reduction in total design time, a savings of 20 man-days in design and quantity estimation, and major cost savings from eliminating construction change orders.

Bentley provided the solutions for both electrical and structural design. iSAT used STAAD.Pro for substation structural analysis and Bentley Substation to create intelligent 3D physical layouts. Integrated Structural Modeling facilitated an integrated workflow between Bentley tools, enabling the reuse of structural models in 3D physical layouts.
  • The substation was located in a Seismic Zone 4, which is a sub-critical zone prone to earthquakes. Safety and system reliability were design priorities addressed by STAAD.Pro.
  • A single change order during construction could cost hundreds of thousands of rupees. Minimizing or eliminating change orders avoided these costs.
