Black & Veatch selected Bentley’s ProjectWise to replace its in-house document and data management solution and migrate nearly all legacy content to ProjectWise. Before migrating legacy data, every document had to be evaluated, prioritized, and stored with metadata to preserve relationships among objects.
Management led a significant planning and design effort involving Black & Veatch IT professionals, IT support from Hewlett Packard Enterprise Services, and Bentley Professional services. The result was a solution that leveraged the inherent capabilities of ProjectWise and included custom programming supplements to identify and migrate more than 8 million documents over the course of two years. They also developed a methodology for evaluating existing content and determining what to migrate.
Black & Veatch expects to realize USD 8 million in net benefits (hard and soft costs) over the first five years. Soft costs were computed based on projected productivity gains made possible by the more advanced, modern platform. Hard costs, which are tied to the migration activity, will be realized through reduced server and storage infrastructure needs. As the migration is completed, Black & Veatch will save approximately USD 265,000 per year in storage and server costs, as well as USD 165,000 per year in contracted support costs.
ProjectWise was used to integrate a design team distributed over multiple locations, as well as to accelerate information sharing and communications across project teams. With over 7,000 projects included in the migration process, accurately tracking the planned disposition, progress, and eventual completion of the migration process was a major challenge.
