Project Summary

Project

The project required ADG Drones (ADG) to capture photos of the Roman aqueduct, Aqueduc de Pont du Gard, in Vers-Pont-du-Gard, France, that could be used by AD-3D to generate a 3D reality model to inspect and assess the structural integrity of the national heritage site. Given the difficult access to the site and level of analysis necessary, the team needed high resolution, aerial photographs and accurate reality modeling software to produce a precise textural mesh revealing the current condition of the aqueduct.

Solution

ADG used unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) flown at a low altitude to capture photos at a millimeter-scale resolution. Then, AD-3D ensured that the aerial imagery was properly orientated and used in ContextCapture to generate a precise 3D reality mesh revealing all cracks and existing conditions of the structure.

Outcome

Using Bentley ContextCapture saved the team significant time, automatically producing a reality mesh from thousands of UAV photos of otherwise unreachable areas of the aqueduct. ContextCapture provided an accurate 3D mesh model that allowed users to extract valuable data for analysis. Combining the capability of ADG UAVs to capture millimeter-scale resolution photos with AD-3D’s expertise using ContextCapture’s ability to automatically extract the finest details from the obtained imagery provided a cost-effective solution to assess the structural integrity of Pont du Gard Aqueduct.

Software

AD-3D used ContextCapture to automatically extract fine details and valuable data from thousands of UAV photos to produce a 3D reality mesh of the Pont du Gard Aqueduct. The textured mesh could then be used as a navigable model with the precise geometric accuracy to analyze damage and assess the structural integrity of the historic site, optimizing inspection and enhancing decision making for preservation.
