Project

A new 132/33-kilovolt, gas-insulated substation is being installed in Sarawak, Malaysia to accommodate load demand and improve supply reliability to rural villages. PESTECH International was awarded the MYR 58 million contract to deliver the project within 28 months.

Solution

To ensure that the design met all requirements, PESTECH International conducted 3D modeling of the substation control building. The team also used digital applications to automate cable calculations, optimizing cable lengths and routes. PESTECH International developed an intelligent standard primary equipment library with manufacturer information, making it easier for other team members to access necessary information to streamline design. This information was implemented into a connected data environment for easier reference across all team locations. Designers could integrate the design environment and cross-reference equipment layouts to electrical schematics with a higher degree of visualization, ensuring that the design was accurately coordinated across all disciplines.

Outcome

Working in a digital environment helped PESTECH International more effectively collaborate, streamlining the process and ensuring that the design meets the highest standards. Working in an open, connected data environment reduced errors and rework to accelerate design time by 50%, saving about MYR 85,000. Using the 3D models to extract accurate bills of material saved an additional MYR 90,000. As a result, the project is on track to be completed on time and within budget.

Software

OpenUtilities Substation was used for the primary and secondary design of the model, helping create the library of components and build the 3D model. ProjectWise was used for collaboration and content management. OpenBuildings Designer and Bentley Raceway and Cable Management helped model the substation and automated calculations. MicroStation helped the team with 2D and 3D drafting.
