    Trafficmap Release Two

    Perth, Western Australia, Australia

Project Summary

Project

Main Roads Western Australia (MRWA) is responsible for managing one of the world’s most expansive state road networks, comprising more than 18,500 kilometers. Committed to improving data collection and sharing for road network management, MRWA needed a more effective way of displaying and presenting accurate traffic data to stakeholders and the public. The type of data included the number and type of vehicles, speed of travel, and vehicle mass at some locations, which is vital for planning an efficient and safe road transport network.

Solution

To improve its display of road network information, MRWA developed Trafficmap. The platform helped improve asset management, making it easier for MRWA employees and project stakeholders to make decisions. It also provided external users with more open access to traffic data. By implementing Trafficmap, MRWA was able to provide an integrated, linear-referenced, and spatially enabled road information system.

Outcome

Trafficmap allows for all road network information to be stored, organized, and accessed in a single location. By publishing this data through a web-based interface, MRWA’s platform provides clarity and transparency in road asset management decisions and allows stakeholders to make better investments. Completed in 2018, Trafficmap has realized a return on investment of AUD 150,000 annually and saved users 25% to 30% in time accessing appropriate information.

Software

AssetWise ALIM was used as the foundation for Trafficmap. The application provided MRWA with streamlined asset information management, helping save significant time collecting, analyzing, and using data for mapping and information dissemination while also optimizing decision-making.

Quote:
  • “AssetWise enabled MRWA to efficiently manage information related to traffic on roads in Western Australia. The team was able to locate the traffic counting sites on the linear-referenced network, enabling the road environment data to be related to the traffic count information to build a digital model of traffic flow.”
