Project

Fengtai Junction Station is set to become one of the most important transportation hubs in Beijing, China. As part of a CNY 7.5 billion railway initiative, China Architecture Design and Research Group conducted pedestrian simulation research to optimize design and construction. The junction station needed to handle the concentrated passenger flow and ensure a safe and effective traveler environment. The research area covered four floors and included the national railway, subway, bus hub, and traffic transfer areas.

Solution

Given the project’s scale and complexity, the project team required comprehensive simulation and modeling technology to assess the station design and perform accurate quantitative analysis on the passenger flow service. By using pedestrian simulation research software, China Architecture Design and Research Group determined the construction design scheme and proposed the operational management plan. The long-term, peak hour pedestrian simulation model was built based on relevant and optimized design suggestions and recommendations to the owners and construction designers.

Outcome

China Architecture Design and Research Group created a model that facilitated scheme comparisons and provided a reference platform for design and construction, predicting the future operation of the junction. The project team improved coordination efficiency, simplified decision-making, and kept the design schedule moving smoothly. By evaluating and optimizing the scale and spatial layout of various pedestrian transport facilities, the scale will be matched with passenger flow. The junction station is on track to be completed in September 2021.

Software

Bentley’s LEGION helped build an objective pedestrian and simulation model covering the entire junction and different passenger flow conditions. The software optimized the spatial layout of the facilities and rationally matched it with passenger flow, avoiding costly construction inefficiencies. LEGION’s model builder and pedestrian simulation software improved coordination efficiencies among project team members and simplified design workflows.
