Project Summary

Project
The University Park campus located in State College, Pa. is Pennsylvania State University’s largest of 24 campuses, featuring almost 1,000 buildings and structures with numerous assets contained within each facility. To better enable facility managers to locate assets and more efficiently meet campus maintenance demands, the university initiated the Virtual Penn State Campus project and developed a reality mesh of the University Park campus that integrates geospatial and asset work order data.

Solution
The project team generated a detailed, geospatially accurate 3D reality mesh of the entire campus and surrounding area from 2,500 aerial images in less than two days using ContextCapture and reality capture technology, such as 3D laser scanning. It also integrated geospatial and asset work order data from the university’s own geospatial information system and computerized maintenance management system with the reality mesh in MicroStation. The final campus reality mesh was then stored on ProjectWise, where it is accessible to maintenance workers and campus staff and updated in real-time for streamlined asset management of campus facilities.

Outcome
The project team produced a fully integrated virtual model that allows facility managers to visualize accurate locations of work orders, increase response time, and improve performance for more efficient asset maintenance and campus management. In addition, better decision making is enabled without having to physically survey assets, because the reality mesh displays building details such as facades and roofs. This capability also allows campus staff to more accurately plan for maintenance jobs, including surveying resources and safety risks. Lastly, virtual reality technology enables people to “walk” in and around this virtual Penn State campus and enjoy an immersive visualization experience.

Software
As the collaborative storage interface, ProjectWise provided web-based access to the model, which eliminated the need for computer storage space and model transfer time. ProjectWise also accelerated and improved accurate information sharing among all stakeholders to optimize campus facility and asset management. ContextCapture enabled the team to quickly and easily build an accurate, 3D, geospatially accurate, detailed representation of campus building exteriors. This data was them integrated into a 3D reality mesh in Bentley WorkStation, making the data searchable.
