Transportation planning software is a digital toolset used by planners and engineers to analyze, model, and manage transportation networks. It helps them make data-driven decisions about roads, public transit, and traffic flow.

Essentially, it allows planners to simulate the impact of potential projects—like a new bus route or redesigned intersection—on a virtual model of their city. This helps them test ideas, identify problems, and optimize plans before any physical construction begins, saving time and money while improving community outcomes.

Transportation planning software is primarily used to model and simulate real-world transportation networks. Planners and engineers use it to:

  • Forecast future demand: Predict how population growth will impact traffic and transit needs.
  • Test "What-If" scenarios: Simulate the effects of new projects, like adding a bike lane or changing traffic signal timing, before construction.
  • Identify problems: Pinpoint the sources of traffic congestion and analyze high-accident locations.
  • Optimize transit: Plan more efficient bus routes and schedules based on ridership data.

By testing ideas digitally, planners can make smarter, more cost-effective decisions to improve safety and reduce travel times.

The main benefit of transportation modeling software is that it allows planners to make smarter, data-driven decisions. By simulating the transportation network digitally, agencies can:

  • Save money: Test the impact and cost-effectiveness of projects before committing to expensive physical construction.
  • Reduce risks: Identify potential problems and unintended consequences of a design in a virtual environment.
  • Improve efficiency: Find the most effective solutions to reduce traffic congestion and improve travel times.
  • Increase safety: Analyze different road configurations to find the safest designs for all users.
  • Justify projects: Clearly communicate the expected outcomes and benefits of a proposed plan to stakeholders and the public.
