SewerCAD provides tested solutions to accepted hydraulic design equations. It includes gradually varying flow calculations with manhole losses and transitions between sub and super-critical flow. It can handle pressure as well as gravity flow. It not only looks at steady state conditions but also can track the operation of the system over time. With its automated design routine, SewerCAD can provide you with pipe size and invert elevations taking a lot of the trial and error out of design calculations. With SewerCAD’s Scenario Manager, it can track through as many what-if designs as you’d like using the visualization tools in the user interface.

Modern model building tools make it possible to create sewer models easily depending on your source of data. You can trace over a background file or automatically create the model from a CAD drawing or a shapefile. Once you build the model, you can perform a large number of design calculations in a short time, giving you a better solution and more than paying for your cost in software.

SewerCAD gives you the flexibility to view the model both in plan and profile. SewerCAD profiles can be exported to as a DXF file.

In addition to standard circular sewers, SewerCAD handles a variety of other shapes including arches, ellipses, and boxes.

SewerCAD also supports Kutter’s, Darcy Weisbach, and Hazen-Williams equations.

You can color code pipes such that the color depends on percent full or depth: rise.

Yes, it’s easy to export a SewerCAD model to SewerGEMS.

It is possible to generate flow versus time graphs (hydrographs) at any element in the system and it is also possible to plot other values as well—such as velocity and depth.

SewerCAD enables the user to specify loads either in flow units or as a count of any kind of facility.

SewerCAD and SewerGEMS are complementary products with the following main differentiating features:
a. Hydraulic engine under the hood: SewerCAD’s gradually varied flow engine makes it ideal for steady-state and extended period simulations for system design and rehabilitation. SewerCAD users can analyze sanitary sewer networks under peak flow conditions with convex routing hydraulics. On the other hand, SewerGEMS uses a fully-dynamic engine (full resolution of St. Venant’s equations) that helps users to accurately model looped networks, flow splits, overflows, and storage capacity.
b. Interfaces and interoperability: SewerCAD comes in two flavors depending on your interface preference: Stand-alone or AutoCAD. SewerGEMS comes in one flavor including four interfaces: Stand-alone, AutoCAD, ArcGIS, and MicroStation.
c. Automated design and rehabilitation: SewerCAD users can leverage constraint-based automatic design features and flexible profiling features for optimized sanitary sewer designs. SewerGEMS does not include automated constraint-based design features.
d. Sanitary, storm, or combined sewers: Even though SewerCAD users can model wet weather contributions to their collection systems, if you are trying to model a combined system, SewerGEMS is a better choice, with its built-in stormwater hydrology and calibration features.
e. Modeling elements: SewerCAD users can model manholes, gravity pipes, force mains, pumps, wet wells, and outlet structures. In addition to all SewerCAD elements, SewerGEMS users can also model open channels, culverts, catch basins, and detention structures.

A pipe in SewerCAD can be roughly defined as a pipe segment between two manholes, so knowing the number of these segments in your system is a good start. Now, if your collection system includes more than one sewershed you can probably use a model big enough to handle your biggest sewershed.

No. If you purchase SewerCAD for AutoCAD, you also get SewerCAD stand-alone, and your models are going to be 100 percent compatible regardless of what interface you use.
