In northern India, National Highway 1A winds 98 kilometers from Banihal to Srinagar, and includes a treacherous 38-kilometer section that snakes through the Pir Panajal Mountains. This geologically active region suffers frequent landslides, avalanches, and rock falls, which close the road for up to 20 days a year. The Indian government decided to widen this important highway by building a second two lane road along side of it.
Fast Facts:
- The existing two lane road winds through mountainous terrain subject to land slides and avalanches
- Constantly changing terrain made it difficult to visualize alternative routes and feasibility
- Estimated cost of the project is $315 million
- Cut cost of project by 15% with elimination of over design
- Work required for detailed design reduced by 60% compared to 2D methods
