OpenUtilities is used to create, manage, and analyze intelligent utility networks by combining engineering-precision CAD tools with full GIS capabilities. It supports electric, gas, water, wastewater, and district energy systems, enabling teams to perform tasks such as network tracing, voltage drop calculations, cable pulling, thematic mapping, reporting, and smart editing within a single integrated environment. It also includes pre-configured, utility-specific data models and advanced tools for producing construction-quality prints, improving operational decision-making, and maintaining accurate, interoperable network data.

OpenUtilities Map comes with the industry-proven standard out of the box data model for Electric, Gas, Water, Wastewater and District Energy. These data models are designed based on Bentley’s extended industry experience, however if users would like to make modifications on them, the administration of OpenUtilities Map is very simple and straightforward process with the tools provided by the product.

OpenUtilities Map is based on MicroStation; therefore, the main file format is dgn. However, like MicroStation, many industry standard file formats are supported as input and outputs. CAD files like .dxf, .dwg, .rdl, .sheet, GIS files like .mif, .mid, .tab, .shp, .obj. .impx can be opened without any conversion. Similarly, users can import  gml, file Geodatabase or other similar GIS formats easily. Users can output OpenUtilities Map data into .shp, .mif, .tab, File Geodatabase, GML or CSV files.

Yes, OpenUtilities Map provides very powerful Map Interoperability capabilities. You can integrate with your enterprise GIS system either via web services like WMS or WFS, or you can build direct connections to ArcGIS, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server or PostGIS. These out of the box capabilities bring the enterprise GIS data into OpenUtilities Map and send the edited data back to source without compromising any data integrity and standardization.

OpenUtilities Map and OpenUtilities Designer shares main graphical design and GIS integration capabilities. OpenUtilities Designer also provides specialized tools and functionalities for the utility design workflow and integration with the work management systems (WMS) like Maximo and SAP via Bentley’s Enterprise Connectivity Services. This WMS integration allows OpenUtilities Designer users to work with utility specific design workflow, create Bill-Of-Materials with the Compatible units and Assembly units and send the design estimates back to the WMS for construction management.

Bentley offers 3 hrs-30 mins on-demand User training for OpenUtilities Map. In this training, users can follow the prerecorded training sessions and take the quizzes to test their knowledge. After completing the course, user gets a Bentley certificate for the accomplishment.  

Although this is a user training course, it will give you a very quick introduction to the product and then you can move to more advanced topics, like configuration, easily.
