Optimizing Traffic Planning and Operations with OpenPaths DYNAMEQ

Transportation professionals often need to provide more realistic and responsive analysis of traffic flow by accounting for time-varying demand, adaptive route choices, and real-world congestion patterns. Unlike conventional tools, dynamic traffic assignment (DTA) offers a way to simulate how vehicles move through the network over time, enabling better evaluation of traffic management strategies making it a vital tool for designing smarter, more resilient transportation systems.

This two-part series introduces OpenPaths DYNAMEQ, Bentley's advanced traffic simulation and DTA software.

Session 1 provides a broad introduction to OpenPaths DYNAMEQ's core capabilities and most common applications, covering everything from congestion pricing and infrastructure upgrades to citywide mobility planning. Session 2 highlights a real-world project on the Italian motorway network, demonstrating how OpenPaths DYNAMEQ enables toll road operators to deliver defensible, scalable, and investment-ready analyses for short-term planning and operational decision-making. See how OpenPaths DYNAMEQ helps agencies and operators move beyond the limitations of traditional approaches, leading to better, faster, and more informed transport decisions.

In response to Italy's 2018 Smart Road initiative, a team of experts from CitiEU Consultancy, Sinelec, Polinomia Srl, and Bentley Systems developed a pseudo real-time traffic model for the A4 Milano-Torino motorway. Using the OpenPaths DYNAMEQ software, the project aimed to evaluate the impacts on traffic flows from events and changes in demand, construction works, traffic incidents, lane closures, and weather.

The model's ability to rapidly simulate scenarios with high reliability and integrate real-time big data inputs, with analytical modelling, has made it an effective tool for both operational planning and emergency response.
