From Model to Decision Tool: Development and Calibration of a Dual-System Utility Model
In this session, engineers from Shobe Engineering will walk through the WaterGEMS model they built for Union Public Utility District (UPUD). You'll see how they organize pressure zones, tanks, pumps, PRVs, and control logic, and how they use extended period simulations, fire flow, and outage scenarios to support both design and daily operations. The session also shows how they keep the model calibrated to SCADA and hydrant data and communicate results to operators and city staff.
What you will learn:
How a production WaterGEMS model is structured for a real utility, including zones, tanks, pumps, PRVs, and controls. How to run and interpret extended period, fire flow, and outage simulations while maintaining calibration. How to present results using contour views, time series graphs, and scenario comparisons so decisions are easier to justify. How to evolve a design-focused model into an everyday operations tool that utilities trust and reuse.
