Sewol Ferry Wreck Recovery in One Piece

More than a year after the tragic sinking of the Sewol Ferry in the Yellow Sea, off the South Korean coast that killed 304 passengers and crew, efforts began for the recovery of the ferry boat wreckage. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries contracted China Ocean Engineering Shanghai Company (COES) to raise the 6,825-ton vessel from a depth of 44-meters within a tight eighteen month timeline. The ministry required the organization to salvage the craft in one piece without damaging the hull and ensure that the remains of the nine victims still onboard stayed in the hull. In addition, COES had to work during the winter and negotiate the sea’s strong current and high waves, which made any engineering solution even more difficult.

Located in Bohai Bay off China’s northeastern coast, the CNY 8.8 billion Bohai Development Project is a joint venture between China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) and ConocoPhillips China Inc. The project expanded existing facilities to include two 40-slot well head platforms, a central platform, and associated pipelines and cables. As engineering, procurement, construction, and installation (EPCI) contractor, CNOOC Offshore Oil Engineering Co., Ltd. (COOEC) was charged with creating detailed designs of the offshore structures and developing engineering software.
