Using Bentley’s iTwin Capture technology, Geomatex created detailed 3D models of the site, enhancing the visitor experience while preserving historical integrity. The project incorporated innovations like photogrammetry, delivering a world-class visual experience. Geomatex’s success led to their recognition as a finalist in the 2024 Bentley Partner Excellence Awards in the Business Transformation category.

Geomatex and the Pyramids Project: Modernizing an Iconic Attraction
The Pyramids of Giza are one of the oldest and most impressive wonders in the world. The sound and light experience, which takes place at night, has been around for more than 40 years and has remained virtually unchanged. However, with the construction of the new Grand Egyptian Museum, the Egyptian government decided to renew the experience to attract more visitors and breathe new life into this historical attraction.
The project was contracted by an English design company, which sought Geomatex for a technological solution. The initial goal was to modernize the experience using LiDAR mapping and laser scanning to capture every detail of the area. However, after a more detailed analysis, Geomatex suggested that Photogrammetry would be a more effective approach. Instead of using LiDAR, which requires specialized equipment and can be more complex in terms of integration, Geomatex convinced the team to opt for iTwin Capture, which maintains texture and accurate details, preserving spatial resolution and dimensions using only images, without the need for laser. “We realized that Bentley, and especially iTwin Capture, are among the best software to bring reality into a digital context,” comments Ezzat Sabry, Managing Director at Geomatex.
Geomatex, with Bentley’s support, implemented iTwin Capture technology, which enabled them to create precise 3D models of the pyramids and the surrounding complex. This digital model served as the foundation for all necessary modifications and was used in the project’s following phases.
The use of iTwin Capture was crucial in ensuring a detailed and accurate visualization not only of the pyramids but also of critical installation points, such as spotlights and speakers. With this, the design and engineering teams were able to make the changes without compromising the historical integrity of the site.
The process was divided into four main phases:
Phase 1: Photogrammetry Survey
Instead of using LiDAR, Geomatex opted for photogrammetry. This decision was based on the trust in iTwin Capture’s quality. Additionally, an innovative data acquisition plan was implemented using drones from different perspectives and elevations. Terrestrial handheld medium-format cameras were also used in certain areas to acquire sub-millimeter Ground Sampling Distance (GSD), ensuring all necessary details, including close-range photogrammetry, were captured when needed.
Phase 2: Terrestrial Mapping
The second phase actually involved Cadastral Mapping, not terrestrial mapping, using GNSS technology. This was done to accurately document the existing cables, spotlights, and speaker systems. This information was integrated into the reality model to provide a complete overview of the current situation and assess available options.
Phase 3: Defining New Locations
The third phase involved determining new installation points for the projection and audio systems. This reconfiguration was done based on the 3D model, ensuring that all systems were optimized for a better experience.
Phase 4: Reality Modeling and Virtual Tools
This phase is still in progress. The 3D model will be used as an operating Digital Twin by integrating ET-OT-IT. Operational technology, such as control panels and SCADA systems that manage the sound and light show, will be controlled from the model, with precise location and status information for each speaker and spotlight. The electric wiring network will also be maintained and operated through the interactive Digital Twin. Additionally, an offline Cesium implementation could be used to manage BIM and GIS developments for structures and assets in this historical area, supporting the development of facilities to accommodate the increasing number of tourists and visitors.
iTwin Capture is one of Bentley’s main tools in the project. It stood out for three main features:
- Integration of Data from Different Sensors iTwin Capture allows for the merging of data from different sensors, such as LiDAR and photographic images, offering flexibility for engineers to choose the appropriate level of accuracy for each part of the project. This facilitated the fusion of information without having to prioritize one sensor type.
- Tiling (Data Fragmentation) Another important feature is the ability to divide the project into tiles (tiling), which makes it easier to use computational power efficiently, especially for large-scale projects like the pyramids.
- High-Quality Data The 3D model generated was extremely detailed, which positively impacted both tourists and even Egyptians themselves when seeing the digital representation of the area. The data quality was a key factor in creating a realistic and precise visual experience.
How Technology Transformed the Experience
The impact of using iTwin Capture was evident from the start. The 3D modeling of the pyramids and surrounding areas was so detailed that when tourists and even Egyptians saw the digital representation, it left a lasting impression. The ability to explore the pyramids in such a precise and accessible digital format was a groundbreaking experience, enhancing the cultural and historical value of the site.
The modernization of the sound and light experience envisions bringing a world-class visual and auditory show, providing visitors with a new way of experiencing the pyramids. The drone show, integrated into the event, was also a great success, taking the experience to another level. “What’s most brilliant in the impact of people and especially non-Egyptians when they see the impression of even Egyptians, to see the 3D reality model of the pyramid very closely, very detailed.”, celebrates Ezzat.
