On Indonesia's northern Java coast, the ground is quietly disappearing. Land in Semarang subsides 10 to 19 centimeters every year, and each tide pushes seawater further into homes, farmland, and livelihoods. Building a toll road here meant building across 50 meters of unstable marine clay — and building a sea dike at the same time, one that had to hold.

PT Wijaya Karya chose a solution rooted in the landscape itself: 6.2 million bamboo poles forming a mattress foundation beneath a combined road and dike. The engineering question was whether that natural system would behave predictably under load. A connected Bentley digital ecosystem answered it. Geotechnical data was centralized in OpenGround, foundation behavior modeled in PLAXIS 3D, alignments and bridges designed in OpenRoads and OpenBridge, and marine installation sequenced in 4D with SYNCHRO — all coordinated in a single data environment through ProjectWise and iTwin.

The riskiest work was inspection. Checking submerged foundations by hand was slow and dangerous, and a missed signal could cascade into failure. Instead, iTwin IoT was wired to piezometers, tidal sensors, and ultrasonic instruments, turning periodic visual checks into continuous remote monitoring with automated alerts and an AI-driven predictive maintenance framework.

The results compound. The team saved 445,000 work hours, cut unplanned rework by 34%, reduced downtime by up to 50%, improved bridge modeling efficiency by up to 40%, and lowered RFIs by 25%. Choosing bamboo over steel avoided 5,000 tons of CO2-equivalent, while drone photogrammetry emitted 30 times less CO2 than conventional survey. Around 4,400 hectares of low-lying land are now shielded, protecting more than 250,000 people from tidal flooding — with 600 jobs created and mangrove impacts actively compensated.

Infrastructure here does more than carry traffic. It buys a coastline time.
