In Palembang City, South Sumatra, rapid and uncontrolled urbanization has been converting vital green spaces and wetlands into built-up surfaces, cutting soil infiltration capacity and leaving the city increasingly exposed to severe flooding and land subsidence. Understanding the problem meant analyzing complex spatio-temporal land cover change from 2015 to 2025, but the fragmented methods available previously could not integrate the diverse environmental datasets that planning required.

Politeknik Negeri Sriwijaya selected OpenCities Map to build an integrated spatial vulnerability model, bringing multi-temporal satellite imagery, digital elevation models, and hydrological datasets into a single geospatial environment. Geospatial modeling was combined with Random Forest and Support Vector Machine machine learning algorithms applied to Landsat 8/9, Sentinel-1, and Sentinel-2 data, mapping ecosystem degradation and establishing the causal relationships behind it.

The work quantified a decade of green open space and wetland conversion, mapped its direct impact on the hydrological balance, and pinpointed high-risk flood and subsidence zones — identifying priority mitigation areas and steering development away from subsidence-prone substrates. Efficient processing of large-volume geospatial data saved critical research and analysis hours across a 300-hour, five-month workload delivered for USD 12,900.

Applied in the planning phase, the result is a geospatial database that safeguards hydrological recharge zones and natural water resources, protects urban communities and public health from flood and subsidence hazards, and builds resilience against intensifying climate-driven floods — a data-driven foundation for proactive, sustainable spatial planning and adaptive disaster mitigation.
