On a waterlogged stretch of North Jakarta wetland, a team set out to do something that had never been done in Indonesia: raise an 82,000-seat stadium crowned by a 3,900-ton retractable roof, and finish it in 36 months. The pandemic thinned the workforce, the site was environmentally sensitive, and the traditional 2D CAD tools on hand could not describe the problem, let alone solve it.
The answer was to build the stadium digitally before building it physically. Structural analysis and wind-load simulation tested the roof design and trimmed material use. Parametric fabrication data drove 40,000 precast concrete components. A 4D construction simulation rehearsed the 65-meter hydraulic lift of the roof, resolving spatial conflicts before a single jack moved, while crowd-flow modeling shaped entry, exit, and emergency egress for 82,000 spectators.
The sustainability dividend showed up in every dimension. Construction waste fell below 7%, engineering hours dropped 20%, and 753,000 work hours were saved across a 15.84-million-hour effort delivered entirely by a local workforce. Clash detection avoided rework worth USD 20,000 to 50,000 each time, and coordination meetings fell by 40% — fewer trips, less duplicated material, less carbon.
The building itself carries the same logic forward. An ETFE roof transmitting 73.9% of UV light removes the need for daytime artificial lighting. A perforated aluminum facade ventilates naturally, easing mechanical cooling loads. Zero run-off water management protects the wetlands beneath it, and transit connections encourage low-carbon access.
Delivered on time and on budget at USD 262 million, the stadium earned Indonesia's first Platinum Green Building certification and set three world records, including the heaviest stadium roof lift ever performed. Its ISO-19650-aligned digital twin now runs the venue — proof that sustainability gains made in design keep paying out for the life of the asset.
