GEOAMBIENTE S/A transformed the remediation of a complex petroleum hydrocarbon contamination site in São Paulo, Brazil, by deploying a high-resolution geotechnical digital twin. The site, compromised by an illegal pipeline tap and characterized by challenging, highly heterogeneous geology, required precise intervention to protect a nearby river and public health. Traditional 2D modeling was inadequate for the 17,000 m3 of impacted soil. The critical breakthrough was the integration of Bentley’s Leapfrog with AI-driven data processing: GPT-based models and OCR were used to automatically extract and standardize thousands of unstructured data points from historical PDF graphs, creating a clean, high-fidelity 3D conceptual model. This digital twin, coupled with contaminant flow simulations in GeoStudio, allowed the team to precisely target the remediation. This precise targeting resulted in a 70% reduction in the planned chemical oxidant volume (from 100 tons to 30 tons), leading to USD 1.4 million in direct cost savings and the avoidance of 18 metric tons of CO2eq emissions from reduced logistics and transport. The project achieved an 85% reduction in contaminant mass removal, saved over 2,100 technical work hours, and accelerated the project timeline by 45 days, proving that digital engineering is the foundation for sustainable, safe, and economically efficient environmental remediation.
