Italy's railways consume about 2% of the country's electricity — roughly 7 TWh a year — and FS Engineering S.p.A. set out to decarbonize that load by self-generating power rather than buying it. The obstacle was delivery capacity, not ambition: dozens of highly varied sites had to be designed at once, while legacy CAD and spreadsheet workflows left multidisciplinary models misaligned and project data hard to trace, slowing every feasibility study. The team moved the program onto a single connected data environment, merging each discipline's models into unified digital twins and feeding drone-captured site surveys straight into plant-layout optimization, so solar and wind designs could be validated virtually and replicated site by site. The result is a pipeline for 2 GW of self-generated renewable capacity by 2034, delivered with 15,000 design hours saved — a 10% reduction — and feasibility preparation cut from 180 to 120 days, a third faster, freeing engineering capacity to hyperscale clean generation across the network and proving digital delivery as the foundation for decarbonizing national rail infrastructure.
