Project Summary

Project
The Energy Factory Knappenrode in Saxony, Germany is a former coal-processing industrial facility that is now a museum. Parts of the complex will be outsourced and machines that are redundant or visually unappealing will be dismantled, given that the extensive grounds and numerous assets are becoming difficult and expensive to maintain in their original size and capacity. To preserve the cultural heritage of the structure and its current assets, authorities mandated that comprehensive documentation be compiled prior to any renovations. To meet these demands, 3D ScanWorld worked with community agencies to perform 3D laser scanning. It required a viable solution to accurately capture the layout of the entire factory.

Solution
The team used the data set from the scans to create classical architectural drawings of floor plans and cross sections as point clouds, importing them into Bentley Pointools for visualization and integration into the digital historical building stock. Using Pointools allowed the team to quickly remove distracting elements from the spaces to focus on the essential components. Team members could develop visual documentation with elaborate image retouching multiple times faster compared to classic photo documentation, as well as navigate the point clouds in real time for review. A uniform set of architectural plans is now available for different disciplines.

Outcome
For the first step, 3D ScanWorld used the data set of the scans to create classical architectural drawings, such as floor plans. These drawings, along with different views and cross sections, formed the basis for the design and planning phase. The intended outcome was a uniform basis for data used by different disciplines. Using visualization provided by Pointools, the team could test how to integrate the new design into the historic building stock.

Software
By using Pointools, 3D ScanWorld could quickly isolate the machines that are to be dismantled. The advantage was that the object had been segmented and that orthogonal views or perspectives could be rendered without any distracting elements impairing the image. Then, the model design was added to the point cloud. The documentation with respect to cultural heritage conservation is very comprehensive, consisting of photo documentation, dimensional CAD drawings, and several pages of text, which describe the facility and give reasons for the dismantling. A film documentation is also available for visitors to see what the spaces looked like before. In a utopian step, these components could be restored using scan data and a 3D printer.
