With a daily volume close to 80,000 vehicles and traffic coming from five different locations, the main access interchange to Ribeirão Preto in São Paulo, Brazil, had been the site of numerous collisions and needed remodeling. The Government of São Paulo initiated a BRL 120 million project to reconfigure the roundabout and retained Beta 2 Engenharia (Beta 2) to design a roadway network that could meet traffic demands for the next 30 years. To quickly and efficiently determine the optimal geometric design solution, Beta 2 required integrated civil design and analysis solutions.  


Beta 2 used PowerCivil for Brazil and RM Bridge to analyze the impact of each design alternative considering compatibility with the local road system, the least amount of expropriation, minimal disruption to current traffic flow, and adjustments for drainage, sewage, and other utility works. Bentley’s civil design applications enabled the team to quickly and accurately share and analyze all design options to determine the optimal geometry and structural reconfiguration. The final remodeling solution extended the roadway by 11,800 meters and included eight viaducts totaling 630 meters, and 20 access ramps, avoiding interweaving of connected roadways.


Using PowerCivil for Brazil and RM Bridge improved coordination and collaboration among the different design teams and accelerated optioneering, enabling Beta 2 to perfect the geometry and structural design quickly and efficiently. The comprehensive analysis and design capabilities of Bentley software combined with modern construction techniques resulted in delivery of the project four months ahead of schedule. The new interchange will improve traffic flows, drastically reduce accidents, and benefit more than 1.5 million travelers. 


Beta 2 used PowerCivil for Brazil from the conceptual phase through final geometry to quickly and dynamically analyze the impact on each design alternative. As a versatile work platform, the application accelerated information mobility and optimized time preparing and generating reports, recording data display preferences, and calculating ground leveling volumes. RM Bridge enabled the project team to measure the viaducts in little time, while its parametric modeling capabilities allowed designers to insert modifications and automatically resize the structure accordingly.
