ArtsAcre Museum of Bengal Modern Art

    Kolkata, West Bengal, India

Project Summary

Rupak Kumar Basak provided structural design and detailed drawings as a consultant to Partha Das & Associates for an INR 400 million art gallery and museum in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. A project of the ArtsAcre Foundation, this facility consists of three blocks of space for workshops, auditoriums, exhibition halls, and libraries.

STAAD.Pro’s flexible modeling environment provided the solution for developing an accurate and efficient structural design. Designing internal spans for the large open spaces posed a challenge, as did joining the spans between buildings at the second floor height of 14 meters. STAAD.Pro optimized the loads to produce a safe and economical design.

Completed in 2015, the ArtsAcre Museum of Bengal Modern Art serves as a hub for artists and art lovers to interact, participate, and create works of art. It displays and conserves the works of the Foundation, as well as other artists.

STAAD.Pro was used to model and design the entire project, providing an efficient alternative to manual design. The software managed the structure and large-span steel truss without a problem.

  • The museum showcases the evolution of Bengal Art from colonial times.
  • Paintings and sculptures represent Bengal Modern Art, Bengal Contemporary Art, Indian Contemporary Art, and Bengal Water Colors.
  • Galleries present short-term exhibits, while studios offer workspace for resident artists.
  • “Manual design of these kinds of projects without Bentley software like STAAD.Pro would have been impossible. Both RCC Structure and large-span steel truss have been designed in STAAD.Pro.”
