    Road Design and Interdisciplinary Coordination of the E10 Avvakko-Lappeasuando Project

Project Summary


Project
To improve roadway safety and ensure the 18-kilometer E10 Avvakko-Lappeasuando roadway in Gällivare, Sweden remains accessible, the route is being widened and rebuilt to include a 2+1 road. The project includes 12 junctions, a 10-kilometer network of new local roads, a pedestrian bridge, and two large underpasses with fences to ensure the safety of abundant wildlife. AECOM Polska was tasked with providing road design, data management, and interdisciplinary coordination for the project. The geographically dispersed design team needed integrated BIM and project management capabilities because of the roadway’s unique location high above the Arctic Circle and the need to accommodate varied interests of transit traffic, local community, and wildlife.


Solution
AECOM configured ProjectWise to meet workflow requirements, using it as the common data environment to store and share multi-discipline design data plus project management and administrative documents. Integrating MicroStation enabled interdisciplinary coordination of 2D and 3D models within the 3D BIM environment. The project team used OpenRoads to analyze road geometry and model different design scenarios and relied on iModels to communicate with the client. Bentley’s collaborative, interoperable software enhanced information mobility among the widely dispersed design team.

Outcome
Using OpenRoads accelerated optioneering, which reduced time spent on repetitive design tasks by five times compared to a traditional design approach. Working in a common data environment with ProjectWise as the single source of truth streamlined workflows, minimized errors, reduced travel costs, and improved productivity and quality, optimizing design efficiency. The use of iModels to communicate with the client saved costs and resource hours by eliminating the need to produce time-consuming drawings.

Software
The team used ProjectWise and MicroStation to collect, store, and manage data from more than 150 files and 300 models and created a single reference model with attached metadata accessible to the multi-discipline, geographically dispersed design team. Creating intelligent color-coded templates in OpenRoads to analyze slopes and ditches and using iModels to share client information helped identify design errors and enhanced overall decision making. Using Bentley’s collaborative, integrated BIM capabilities automated otherwise manual processes to minimize errors, save design time, and reduce overall costs.
