    Revamping ABS Steelworks

Project Summary

Project
At the forefront of technological innovation and production of special steel, ABS Steelworks in Buttrio, Udine, Italy required expansion and modernization of the original steelworks to minimize environmental impact of the production fumes extraction system. To design the costly modernization of the site, the organization needed a comprehensive survey of approximately 43 hectares, including structures, systems, and piping inside the plant, as well as difficult-to-access external areas.

Solution
The project team used various survey methods to capture the complex infrastructure. They then processed the data into point clouds within Pointools and generated a 3D reality mesh using Bentley’s ContextCapture, linking the information in MicroStation and AECOsim Building Designer for rapid generation of the BIM objects. The resulting reality mesh from the captured data and subsequent BIM model improved design integration, allowing the implementation of the first revamping phase to be reached three months after delivering the 3D model.

Outcome
The interoperability and automated capabilities of Bentley applications reduced post-processing times, allowing the final deliverable to be completed within 45 days of the surveys. Given the strategic importance of the site and the related production activities, the need for a complex and comprehensive survey was strictly necessary and indispensable. The survey of the approximately 430,000-square-meter steelworks system involved structures, systems, and piping to design the planned costly modernization of the fume extraction line. It also had to be achieved in a very short timeframe. Using Bentley technology drastically reduced the post-processing times of the surveys, allowing the finished product to be on hand just 45 days after the surveys were returned. The accurate reality modeling significantly contributed to the overall view of the project and significantly reduced the risk for the people who would have been involved in surveying complex and dangerous places.

Software
Using ContextCapture to correctly reconstruct the roofs of the industrial buildings from the photo survey eliminated the need for dangerous on-site surveys and associated temporary provisions, saving at least EUR 70,000. The simultaneous management of 3D reality meshes and point clouds within AECOsim Building Designer and MicroStation allowed the rapid generation of BIM objects, while simultaneously verifying the accuracy of the two surveys (for points, lines, and surfaces).
