Project Summary


Project
Located in the southwest of Russia’s Murmansk region, JSC Kovdorsky GOK occupies 2,500 hectares and is the only mining production facility in the region. A 40,000-cubic-meter rock collapse in the facility’s iron ore quarry suspended mining operations and development on this site, resulting in loss of mineral resources on the eastern side. To redevelop the site, the project team had to monitor and survey the complex plant configuration amid compromised visibility. The team members used reality modeling as the basis for implementing a technical study for re-commissioning the quarry, which will enable the development of 155 million tons of ore and generate a RUB 2.5 billion profit for the region.

Solution
The project team used aerial photography to complete the survey and processed the images using Bentley’s ContextCapture to generate 3D reality models. These models enabled precise calculations of raw materials and finished products in stockpiles. Using a Phantom 4 quadcopter and ContextCapture application, JSC Kovdorsky obtained information on the propagation rate/opening of cracks and their further development/opening on the southern flank along the carbonatite dike. The team also identified small, potentially hazardous areas and noted a decrease in water inflow that was previously observed.

Outcome
Using drones and Bentley’s reality modeling application facilitated the capture of 20 to 30 percent more information that can be used for technical design of the eastern side of the quarry. Modeling improved efficiency by 40 percent, certainty by 20 percent, and reduced labor costs by 40 percent. Based on the simplicity, reliability, and mobility of Bentley’s reality modeling solution, future facility surveys are planned and expected to deliver a 40-percent increase in efficiency of the work performed.

Software
The use of the ContextCapture application to calculate raw materials and finished products in stockpiles improved safety, efficiency, certainty, and reduced labor costs. By including the ContextCapture aerial photographs of the eastern side in the set of measures, it was possible to obtain additional information to draw the technical design of the eastern side of the quarry. This information will enable 155 million tons of ore to be mined, generating a profit of RUB 2.5 billion.
