Skyway Wastewater Treatment Plant Phase II Expansion

Project Summary


The CAD 158 million Phase II Expansion project for Skyway Wastewater Treatment Plant in Burlington, Ontario, will increase the plant’s rated capacity from 118 to 140 megaliters per day, as well as implement tertiary treatment. CH2M HILL’s challenge was to allow the existing plant to remain in operation while the expansion was under construction. Being able to facilitate construction staging, a temporary installation of the waste thickeners, was necessary in order to ensure a successful project.

A 3D model of the existing plant was required as the basis for the expansion design, enabling a collaborative BIM approach. Drawings dating from 1961 through 2009 were incorporated in the model, and specific assets were catalogued and geospatially located to ensure proper integration into the new design models. All asset information was authored using Bentley’s integrated products and managed with ProjectWise, including the geo-context. The intelligent models shared consistent data definitions across 13 facilities and the underground network of piping and utilities.


Using ProjectWise for collaboration and content management, the effort — and thus the cost — to model the existing plant was reduced by 25 percent. Using Bentley’s integrated products, the project team reduced coordination time by at least 50 percent. Generating quantities from the model required 75 percent less time. The biggest money saver — installing a temporary waste thickener — was visualized with Bentley Navigator, saving the client an estimated CAD 1 million by allowing the existing plant to remain partially in service.

Various Bentley offerings were used for this BIM approach in order to author discipline-specific components of the models, including OpenPlant PID for intelligent schematics, Bentley Raceway and Cable Management for electrical information, and AECOsim Building Designer for intelligent building information. CH2M HILL developed ProjectWise Resource Manager to distribute extremely large BIM datasets to users’ computers, ensuring these resources were up to date. Bentley Navigator facilitated model review, visualization, and clash detection and resolution.
