Project Summary

Project
Located on a 130-hectare reclaimed island, the Hong Kong Boundary Crossing Facilities (HKBCF) will serve as a strategic multi-modal transportation hub in western Hong Kong and provide clearance services for vehicles and passengers entering and leaving Hong Kong via the new 50-kilometer Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao bridge. Leighton Asia in joint venture with Chun Wo Building Construction (LeightonJV) was responsible for construction of the 40,000-square-meter passenger clearance building and associated works. To complete the USD 4.6 billion project consisting of a wide range of infrastructure and buildings in a timely and cost-effective manner, the multi-discipline team integrated BIM technology to streamline workflows and identify potential engineering clashes.

Solution
LeightonJV used Bentley’s BIM advancements to facilitate communications, and anticipate and rectify construction problems. Bentley software provided a collaborative modeling environment, enabling the team to design and construct the wide range of infrastructure and underground utilities using MicroStation as a common platform. Using Bentley’s flexible, interoperable design and visualization capabilities improved modeling accuracy and enhanced information mobility to keep construction on schedule.

Outcome
Bentley BIM technology facilitated clash detection, which reduced rework during construction, saving approximately 12 percent of the construction budget. Integrating Bentley Pointools and Bentley Descartes enabled the survey team to compare 3D design models to point clouds to avoid onsite discrepancies, which saved 15 percent of the survey budget. Bentley’s collaborative BIM applications streamlined workflows among the multi-discipline engineering team and enhanced communication with stakeholders, all of which resulted in a project that was delivered on time and on budget.


Software
Integrating MicroStation with OpenRoads, LeightonJV was able to combine all infrastructure design on a single common platform in the same .dgn format. Bentley Pointools and Bentley Descartes enabled the team to compare scanned point clouds with the BIM models for more accurate designs. Using ProjectWise to share information in real time among the multiple disciplines ensured all files were current and provided a rational file storage system, while LumenRT illustrated construction progress to the government and the public through animated visualizations.
