Road and Roadside Feature Extraction Using Combined Mobile & Aerial LiDAR Data for Transportation Operation

This session will be a discussion about how Sanborn has developed feature extraction technology that extracts transportation objects from combined aerial and mobile data sets in a semi-automated manner. Sanborn collected airborne and Mobile LiDAR over a known project area with existing control and check data sets. The mobile and aerial data sets meet the accuracy and information content required for geospatial information for mapping applications as well as the additional information that can be mined for potential asset inventory and infrastructure information content. The mobile technology allows for the low-risk, rapid collection of geospatial information, limiting safety impacts to workers; however, there are limitations as to the range of the sensor and occlusions, or shadowing, affecting potential information content. The aerial LiDAR acts similarly to traditional aerial imagery, allowing for the swift collection of elevation information for detailed surface modeling as well as feature extraction using “LiDARgrammetry.” Both technologies collect enormous amounts of point-cloud data that were merged together using TerraScan in Bentley MicroStation. Then, this data set was passed through automated feature extraction modules to identify transportation objects. Key takeaways include:
• Merging point clouds collected from different sensor platforms can fill the gaps for each individual technology.
• Before being combined, the input point clouds should be in the same projection transformation, validated with control points, geometrically corrected, geo-coded, and processed or filtered into the desired classes.
• Extracting stationary physical assets related to roadways, such as road lanes, road edges, shoulders, dividers, traffic signals, signage, paint markings, poles, etc., leads to a scalable approach for maintaining highly detailed inventories.

In December 2012, Chobani opened the world’s largest yogurt production facility. The 1 million-square-foot facility was completed in an unprecedented 326 days. Site development plans had to consider the time and effort it would take to develop the design and prepare construction documents as well as how the design would impact the time and effort of the physical construction. In order to meet the aggressive timeline, Manhard Consulting, Ltd. implemented the cutting-edge technology of SITEOPS to streamline the design process and optimize the earth movement necessary to develop the 200-acre site. In this session:
• Attendees will gain an understanding of how utilizing SITEOPS during the design process can shorten the duration of project delivery.
• Attendees will learn how the site layout capabilities of SITEOPS allowed stakeholders to participate in design charrettes and provide instant feedback, accelerating the site design process.
