Project Summary

The Stockholm Bypass is a new motorway link to the west of Stockholm, Sweden connecting Kunges Kurva and Häggvik. The URS/ÅF AB consortium was awarded contracts for the rock tunnel and the Akalla/Häggvik Interchange, which will include a bypass with 27 road alignments across 22 kilometers, 11 bridges and 3 tunnels, complex water and drainage systems, and electrical and ducting networks. Trafikverket, the client, required a world-class project using building information modeling (BIM) processes with geospatially coordinated, intelligent 3D models.

To meet the client’s requirements, URS used BIM processes and Bentley software to implement a common data environment for all project stakeholders in offices across Europe, create the required intelligent models with metadata, support a continuous review and mark-up process, and deliver intelligent models for the entire project lifecycle and asset management. With this environment, URS’s goal is to eliminate all interdisciplinary clashes and minimize the number of drawings it needs to deliver – ultimately by providing Trafikverket complete 3D models of the project.

When the road design team changed its way of working from 2D to 3D design and began using 3D techniques as a work in progress tool, they began to see numerous benefits in the areas of quality, time, and money. And, having a well-defined library of styles and symbols in a collaborative environment helped the team follow the client’s BIM requirements and save time at the materials take-off stage. URS estimates that using 3D modeling for road design will reduce drafting hours by 30% and the number of drawings needed by 90%.

The road design was started in Bentley MXROAD, where the geometric design was established.  Then to alleviate interdisciplinary issues and multiple file format problems the project was migrated to PowerCivil (InRoads) for Sweden. All disciplines delivered i-models that underwent full clash detection using Bentley Navigator and then integrated to create 3D models of the project, complete with all design data and metadata. Final illustrations are generated using Bentley MicroStation. ProjectWise supports rapid design team deployment, integration of geographically distributed resources, revision and tracking control, collaboration and faster data sharing.
