    Tanami Expansion Project

Project Summary

Project

The AUD 65 million Tanami Expansion Project comprises a throughput upgrade for the Newmont-owned Tanami gold mine in the Northern Territory of Australia. To increase gold production while improving operational efficiency of Tanami’s 20-year-old processing plant, Tetra Tech needed to design a solution to install additional equipment within a constrained footprint of the existing mine site. The new infrastructure would improve the throughput of the processing plant from 2.3 to 2.6 million tons per year, and provide a safer means for producing required mine backfill material for the site.

Solution

Tetra Tech deployed OpenPlant coupled with host of Bentley applications to develop comprehensive 3D models, which were used to automatically generate Material Take-Offs (MTOs) for the piping, concrete, and structural steel. OpenPlant PID allowed for quick generation of P&IDs required for detailed engineering, while OpenPlant Isometrics Manager was used to auto-generate piping isometric drawings directly from the piping 3D model. The project team used Bentley’s i-model technology to publish intelligent models from AECOsim Building Designer and OpenPlant Modeler and ProjectWise as its common data environment. By employing Navigator for design reviews, Tetra Tech enabled the analysis of potential operational and maintenance issues as well as clash detection and resolution.

Outcome

The interoperability of Bentley software brought an old plant back to life within a smaller footprint than would have been feasible otherwise. Utilizing an accurate 3D model of the existing and new plant facilities enhanced project safety components and enabled information mobility among the multi-discipline design team, which in turn led to clearer discussions on access and egress methods, maintenance methods, and crane access and crane lifting studies.

Software

Using OpenPlant PID to upload P&IDs and synchronize with the database significantly reduced drafting time, as alterations to the piping components and plant equipment did not require re-tagging. The interoperability of OpenPlant and AECOsim Building Designer allowed Tetra Tech to automatically label 2D deliverables using the intelligence read from the 3D model, eliminating rework and reducing preparation time required for site plans and elevations by 35 hours per drawing. Tetra Tech’s project team relied on OpenPlant Isometrics’ auto generation capabilities and its ability to calculate and utilize white space on isometrics. Bentley’s intelligent isometric drawing software reduced isometric generation time from three hours to one hour per isometric, resulting in a savings of USD 250,000 for the client.
