The EUR 5.5 million redevelopment project along the Adriatic coast of Italy is a 14,000-square-meter complex consisting of three separate buildings, housing offices, commercial space, and a hotel with meeting and convention rooms. To help ensure survival of the buildings under seismic events, Studio Tecnico Mannelli e Associati designed the decks using reinforced concrete slabs, post-tensioned with sliding steel cables. Performing the complex verification calculations for this type of slab rarely used in Italy required sophisticated, efficient analysis and design tools.
Studio Tecnico Mannelli e Associati used RAM Concept to calculate the bidirectional behavior of the concrete slab with the coaction of cables to analyze stresses and strains. Bentley tools enabled the team to identify the realistic stresses and strain on the horizontal structures in both ultimate and serviceability conditions, and allowed the engineers to define the optimal distribution of post-tension cables, as well as the exact sequence of tensioning.
Using RAM Concept allowed Studio Tecnico Mannelli e Associati to analyze post-tensioning in the reinforced concrete slab to optimize structural design while minimizing the impact on overall project costs. Performing the sophisticated analysis of the concrete slab with Bentley’s comprehensive, accurate software tools saved significant modeling and design time, and facilitated construction operations. Using post-tensioned, reinforced concrete slabs for seismic isolation improved the robustness of the structures by increasing their monolithic qualities to help ensure survival of the buildings under catastrophic events.
