Project Summary

Project
Southwest Electric Power Design Institute constructed the CNY 17.6 billion Zhaotong Converter Station as part of China’s West-East Power Transmission initiative, which will enhance regional power transmission and meet the power grid load for Guangdong Province. The station receives DC transmission power of 2x3200 megawatts from Xiluodu Right Bank Power Plant and transmits ±500 kilovolts via double circuit HVDC to the Guangdong grid.

Solution
The Design Institute solved complex engineering challenges with the application of Bentley software, including connection of auxiliary power from an external power source, noise analysis and control for the converter station, treatment of the foundation system, retention of side slopes, shipment of heavy equipment, and grounding of the electrodes connection. Exporting the station model as 3D PDF documents made it easier for the supervisor, constructor, and owner to view the project.

Outcome
Using Bentley software, the Design Institute completed the project three months ahead of schedule, cut project delivery costs by 8%, reduced operating costs by 10%, and increased the rate of return on investment by 5%. This successful project promotes technical innovation in power grid upgrades, cost-effective and efficient long-distance power transmission improvement, and sustainable development of the Southern Power Grid.

Bentley products solved numerous engineering challenges, including earthwork (GEOPAK), structural analysis (STAAD.Pro), integrated substation design (Bentley Substation), refined cabling (Bentley Raceway and Cable Management), clash detection/resolution (Bentley Navigator), and collaborative design (ProjectWise). ProjectWise reduced engineering design time by 25%.
