Project Summary

Project

Located in China’s Sichuan Province, the CNY 300 million Panzhihua Three-line Construction Museum is a cultural facility built by Panzhihua Municipal Party Committee and Government. The 24,000-square-meter, petal-shaped building houses exhibition space, a collection warehouse, administrative offices, guest services, and equipment areas as well as auxiliary space. Sichuan Provincial Architectural Design and Research Institute developed the complex design by applying BIM advancements.

Solution

From design to construction, the project team used BIM advancements, including AECOsim Building Designer, with ProjectWise to enhance information exchange among disciplines and ensure timely collection, update, management, and data application. The 3D model of the project enabled overall optimization and collision detection across disciplines. Quick and accurate adjustments to the complex space were made using parametric modeling. The 3D sectional views effectively communicated the design concepts at the construction stage.

Outcome

AECOsim Building Designer enabled the institute to shorten the project period by 60 percent. Additionally, they reduced design errors by 80 percent and increased design depth by 50 percent using AECOsim Building Designer’s 3D model. Using Bentley Navigator, the project team found and modified more than 100 collision points. With ProjectWise, BIM processes saved an estimated CNY 1 million in operating costs, and provided a reliable basis for construction management and cost control, reducing risks and costs.

Software

AECOsim Building Designer enabled a BIM methodology to be incorporated from design to construction in order to enhance coordination and collaboration across the team. ProjectWise provided a collaborative design platform where design information from all disciplines was combined in an information model, which allowed the project to achieve information interoperability. The sharing and integration of information at the design stage allowed the different teams to solve problems cooperatively. This work efficiency shortened design time from 14 to seven months.

Outcome/Facts
  • BIM advancements of AECOsim Building Designer are promoted and applied in design, construction, operation, and management of large public buildings by using a 3D information model as a carrier.
  • Secondary designs by outside contractors were transferred using the ProjectWise platform, avoiding delays and information loss.
