The GBP 160 million Cancer Treatment Centre integrated BIM project transformed a large clinical hospital into one that feels like a smaller, non-clinical facility to make patient visits less stressful. Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners (RSHP) achieved this by breaking up the building’s 14 stories into three 'care villages.' The building is designed to support change in a patient’s clinical needs, so flexibility and adaptability are key parts of the design, structure, and services strategy, which had to be communicated and documented accurately throughout the project lifecycle.
RSHP used Bentley’s AECOsim Building Designer and MicroStation BIM offerings for its information modeling. This modeling was used for design development, environmental analysis, construction documentation, room data schedules, design change management, prototyping and fabrication, coordination, clash resolution, and more. The information mobility and interoperability that the Bentley software provides ensured accurate integration of the various models and drawings that were created in different file formats by the project’s stakeholders and collaborators.
AECOsim Building Designer and MicroStation facilitated flexible, adaptable, and collaborative information modeling, saving time, improving coordination, and reducing risk. The accuracy of the BIM dataset provided a high degree of quality control for the off-site prefabrication that was used as a cost and space-saving initiative due to the tight spatial constraints of the construction site. In addition, RSHP’s client can use the final BIM dataset for asset management to reduce cost and improve operational efficiencies of the cancer treatment center.
RSHP credits the success of its first “deep-level BIM project” to the flexibility and interoperability of Bentley’s AECOsim Building Designer and its innovative application by RSHP’s excellent and truly committed project team. The same federated information model originally created in AECOsim Building Designer has been used for all aspects of the project’s design, development and construction. This has allowed RSHP to provide a timely response to design changes and ensure quality control throughout the design process.
