As part of its GBP 3.1 billion AMP6 business plan to provide more efficient water and wastewater treatment services across Kent, Sussex, Hampshire, and the Isle of Wight, Southern Water partnered with engineering design consultant MWH to bring front-end engineering services in house. The GBP 700,000 project required Southern Water to overcome management of front-end engineering design (FEED), accurately estimate project costs, and retain control of design asset information to help realize a potential cost savings of up to GBP 50 million. To achieve these goals with a dispersed engineering team, Southern Water needed a collaborative information modeling and analysis platform.
Southern Water used Bentley’s MicroStation, OpenPlant, AECOsim Building Designer, and PowerCivil to establish a foundation for gathering data at the point of design and analyze design costs. Bentley Navigator Schedule Simulation provided construction cost analysis while ProjectWise served as the common platform and single source of truth for current design data, and AssetWise ALIM supported asset lifecycle information management. Bentley’s collaborative modeling and analysis software ensures the right data is captured at the right time by the right people to allow Southern Water to effectively manage its FEED.
Using Bentley’s collaborative software increased ROI, facilitating coordination among the dispersed engineering partners to enable timely design decisions for optimal cost control. The common application platform supported by Bentley software accelerated project delivery, taking weeks off the implementation timeline. Implementing Bentley solutions in the Citrix Web-based environment minimized equipment operating costs. The interoperability of Bentley software improves information sharing and supports complete asset lifecycle information management, which reduced total expenses and optimized operations.
Southern Water used Bentley MicroStation, OpenPlant, AECOsim Building Designer, and PowerCivil to establish the foundation for gathering asset data at the point of design and build a collaborative platform that included Navigator Schedule Simulation and ProjectWise, for making timely decisions and controlling costs. Sharing project deliverables in ProjectWise facilitated collaboration across regions and countries and minimized travel costs. Integrating Bentley’s design and analysis software with AssetWise ALIM provided Southern Water a lifecycle information management process crucial to maintaining operational efficiency and excellent customer service.
