Jacobs is one of the world’s largest and most diverse providers of technical, professional, and construction services. After experiencing seven years of positive results on projects that used ConstructSim, Jacobs’ new goal was to expand its use of ConstructSim to include centralized WorkFace Planning for multiple projects in an enterprise-wide effort to realize additional savings and efficiencies.
Although a dedicated WorkFace Planner was traditionally employed for each project, Jacobs is now using ConstructSim to support 14 projects with 19 models, all managed by just one WorkFace Planning manager and one ConstructSim administrator. By coaching engineers on the level of information details needed for the PDS and PDMS models, Jacobs is now able to create more complete ConstructSim models.
With projects ranging in value from USD 120 million to USD 670 million, Jacobs was able to reduce the number of dedicated workface planning managers on individual projects to save over USD 1 million. Standardization of project setup saved approximately USD 460,000. Project delivery costs were reduced through material status enhancements, more accurate contract terms for fabricators, and improved 4D playback for sequencing work and schedule verification.
From an IT perspective, Jacobs used ConstructSim and Microsoft SQL Server to provide the ability to validate information from the data that it received from other engineering, procurement, and construction electronic tools. Information mobility was enhanced through the creation of reporting structures that could be exported into Excel for email capability, and the use of BlueBeam software to create and markup model shots.
