Constructing a high quality, low-cost, reliable power plant is complex, with huge numbers of workers, detailed requirements, and materials. Minimizing project risk and ensuring success required Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy (Hitachi-GE) to precisely manage even the lowest-level task and provide fieldwork information intuitively, reliably, and in an easily accessible manner. Hitachi needed to design a system that supports integrated control and fine management of construction while providing field workers with timely access to clear and accurate information.
Hitachi-GE implemented a human-centered approach to study how their people really work, and based on insights gained, designed their Integrated Plant Construction System using Bentley MicroStation as the platform. The flexibility and interoperability of MicroStation enabled Hitachi to customize application development, interface with other 3D software construction systems, and support various hardware devices crucial to effectively communicating with fieldworkers.
With MicroStation as the platform for its Integrated Plant Construction System, Hitachi-GE can track tens of thousands of work records, linking task to worker, timing, and process, and use this data to make future plans and adjustments. Having consistent, easy access to accurate construction information enables on-site personnel to be more proactive allowing Hitachi-GE to deliver high quality, reliable power plants within budget and on schedule. Hitachi-GE expects to realize a 20% reduction in construction labor costs with the efficiencies and project control enabled by its MicroStation-powered system.

Using Bentley’s 3D modeling and visualization technology enables all members of the project team to see graphical depictions of the schedule for any project area and task, as well as a tabular display, providing a user-friendly interface facilitating collaboration, streamlining the construction process, and enhancing productivity.
