Project Summary

The Illinois State Toll Highway Authority selected Hanson Professional Services to design the reconstruction and widening of a 22-mile section of Interstate 90 west of Chicago. The Hanson team included three partners and four other design firms, spread across 13 offices. Construction was required to be underway within a year of design team selection, and additional requirements included minimizing impact on drivers, developing an extensive intelligent transportation system plan, and balancing the earthwork along the route. To meet the deadlines it was crucial for Hanson to effectively manage information and deliverables for this USD 245 million project.

Document management and important communications were managed via a file-sharing website linked to ProjectWise. Project files, requests for information (RFIs), announcements, and project schedules were readily accessible to all distributed team members. MicroStation and GEOPAK were used to generate cross sections and models, addressing all levels of design requirements including the balancing of earthwork related to detention ponds, oversize ditches, and building pads.

The design team successfully designed and prepared final contract documents in less than seven months, submitting deliverables for six mainline contract packages, one advance work intelligent transportation system (ITS)/lighting contract, a steel procurement package, four crossroad bridge contracts, a noise wall contract and an ITS equipment/building contract. Construction RFIs, submittals, material substitutions and correspondence were added to the system and tracked. With the efficient document management and design system in place, the Hanson team was able to provide additional ITS services, interchange design services, green/reuse project elements, and separate signing and striping plans.

ProjectWise was used to integrate a design team distributed over multiple locations; facilitate rapid team deployment; and accelerate information sharing. Its file-naming wizard required users to name all files correctly, including engineering design files as well as business documents such as spreadsheets and RFIs. MicroStation provided modeling capabilities, with GEOPAK’s integrated mapping tools and design automation supporting specific road design and engineering requirements.
  • Document management efficiency enabled Hanson to provide value-added services to the client throughout the project.
  • The Hanson design team successfully designed and prepared final contract documents in less than seven months from conceptual design to advertisement for 22 miles of interstate reconstruction using the traditional design-bid process.
