Engbras Software wanted its major projects to realize the benefits of building information modeling (BIM), even when most designers are still creating 2D designs. The organization’s philosophy is that only a BIM methodology can guarantee on-time construction deliverables, and it has modeled more that 2 million square feet of industrial, commercial, and residential buildings in the past five years. When design teams share BIM models with all project participants, changes and resolution of conflicts can be made in the design, rather than on the construction site. Additionally, BIM coordination among project team members ensures proper and timely construction.
Using AECOsim Building Designer, Engbras created workflows in which multiple disciplines share different file formats – including point-cloud models – by integrating them into a single BIM environment. Additionally, Engbras generated 3D models as i-models that can be opened using Navigator Mobile to understand and monitor projects during construction. The BIM coordination drastically reduced the number of work interferences and inconsistencies, decreasing project delays and unanticipated costs.
Using BIM-powered coordination around 3D models shared as PDFs, Engbras reduced errors in design and construction through more effective clash detection and resolution, which has achieved lower project costs, faster delivery time frames, and reduced volumes of waste materials disposed in the environment.
Using AECOsim Building Designer, Engbras can model all project components (including the architecture, hydraulics, electrical, HVAC, and structure) to compose the multi-disciplinary environment required for 3D modeling and BIM coordination. Mobile access to BIM data facilitates deeper, on-site project understanding and better project monitoring during construction.
