Project Summary

Project
The Westgate Footbridge in Auckland, New Zealand, links the community facilities of a shopping center, local library, and sports complex, which had been cut off from each other by highway expansion. The challenge of this NZD 5 million project was to design the approach ramp as a double spiral – with both left-handed and right-handed spirals – while minimizing its environmental impact on the local creek that it followed.

Solution
D&H Steel Construction used ProSteel to create the bridge model, which served as the base from which it modeled, detailed, and fabricated a series of jigs that were then used to form the spirals and ensure the ends of the truss sections were accurate. The ProSteel model became the primary source of accurate information and allowed D&H Steel Construction to coordinate the precast concrete, foundations, handrails, throw screens, and pedestrian lighting.

Outcome
Using ProSteel to deliver accurate shop drawings and a jig translated into significantly reduced man-hours. Being able to view and measure the fabricated elements from any orientation meant that the design team could accurately model the bridge profiles and cross sections, create pipe-rolling information, specify all truss diagonals, and more, all of which minimized the risk of errors. Delivery time was reduced through improved accuracy, reduction in man-hours, and timely availability of information to other disciplines.

Software
Using ProSteel for 3D design not only halved the time necessary to detail the structure as compared to traditional 2D design, but also guaranteed that there was no lost time during the erection phase because the precast units fit perfectly. Reports produced via ProSteel were the basis of the team’s quality assurance procedures and provided the client with necessary quality assurance documents for welding and surface coatings.
Outcome/Facts:
  • ProSteel was used to produce the complex spiral that minimized the impact on the adjacent creek.
  • ProSteel’s 3D capabilities cut design time in half compared to traditional 2D design.
