Project Summary

Project
The CNY 7.2 billion copper smelting plant recently completed in Anhui Province, China, is the largest copper smelting plant in the world. It will produce 400,000 tons of copper cathode and 1.45 million tons of sulfuric acid annually. Tongling Nonferrous Metals Group Companies required the technologically advanced plant to be constructed at the least possible cost and within 36 months. China Nerin Engineering completed basic design, detailed design, and technical services within 16 months.

Solution
The scope of work extended from basic design to detailed design, involving 15 disciplines and more than 80 technical personnel in different locations. ProjectWise was implemented to ensure all project participants were using the same data on the same platform. The Bentley PlantSpace Design Series made communications easier between the designers, construction contractors, and the owners.

Outcome
Using ProjectWise as a collaborative design platform and the Bentley PlantSpace Design Series to build the digital plant, China Nerin reduced design time by 20%, reduced changes by 56%, and shortened the design cycle. Onsite designers collaborated with headquarters via synchronized data and communications. The optimized plant layout required a 10% smaller, less-costly building, and 3D documents shortened the construction cycle by about 30 days.

Software
Adopting Bentley’s 3D collaborative design technology allowed China Nerin Engineering to optimize the plant configuration, improve design quality, decrease the owner’s investment, and accelerate construction. The 3D plant model that was handed over allowed the owner to implement digital operation of the plant lifecycle, including maintenance management.
