Project Summary

Project
CB&I wanted to create complex, 3D i-models and establish workflows that would empower all project participants to access and use them to perform their specific work functions on AP1000 construction projects. i-models would help them plan work activities more effectively and reduce project costs. CB&I chose the i-model format because it is interoperable, portable, and secure.

Solution
Approximately 15,000 files are collected and processed daily from Westinghouse’s WEMMEX repository, and another 1,000 are processed separately via Intergraph PDS. More than 100 batch process routines collect the native DGN/DRV files for preprocessing and organization. Over 8,000 i-models are created daily, including 64 i-model packages created by each area and discipline. The packages are uploaded to several server locations for dissemination to end user workstations for easy access and use to support work functions.

Outcome
The primary return on this innovation is having hundreds of trained construction personnel using 3D models – for the first time – to perform their specific functions faster and more effectively. The solution saves time in the early stages of AP1000 construction projects. In addition, CB&I has already realized significant cost savings by using the i-models to support planning work between different discipline activities such as piping and electrical tray installation.

Software
CB&I used the i-model Composer to retrieve, interpret, and enhance business data from SmartPlant Review DRV files and integrate that with the PDS models to package and publish i-models by construction area and engineering discipline. Construction teams use Bentley Navigator to access the i-models and use them to perform their specific job functions.
Outcome/Facts:
  • Over 8,000 i-models are created daily, including 64 i-model Packages created by each area and discipline.
  • CB&I successfully developed and deployed cutting-edge uses of i-model capabilities on a megaproject.
