Project Summary

Project
The USD 73 million project to install new docks was part of enhancements to the Port of Montevideo. On this project for the National Ports Administration of Uruguay, Cathie Associates was contracted by construction consultant Soletanche Bachy Argentina to evaluate issues encountered during the construction of dock foundations. The main engineering challenge was the hard ground conditions that caused problems during the installation of foundation piles.

Solution
The initial pile load tests showed damages on the steel piles due to column buckling and bending. To remedy this, Cathie Associates reassessed the soil profile and engineering parameters, evaluated pile drivability, and redesigned the pile foundations. The company used gINT to interpret soil data, define soil profile and design parameters, estimate pile penetration, and localize boreholes performed on site.  

Outcome
Cathie Associates saved time and money through the use of gINT. The reassessment of pile design using gINT saved the cost of 344 steel piles and one year in delivery time. It would have been catastrophic to the project had the piles needed to be replaced.
