Project Summary

Project
The USD 126 million project required Barge, Waggoner, Sumner and Cannon (BWSC) to design the Infantry Brigade Combat Team Complex (IBCTC) as an energy-efficient facility to support the operations of six combat battalions. The complex was comprised of 28 new buildings spanning over 600,000 square feet, located on an 80-acre site in Fort Stewart, Georgia. Working with Walbridge construction on this design/build contract, and more than 100 BWSC team members, multiple engineering disciplines, and various consultants, BWSC needed a collaborative workflow and interoperable software to deliver the LEED Silver certified complex on schedule.

Solution
BWSC used more than a dozen Bentley products to implement an integrated BIM approach, producing six design packages with approximately 850 3D design models and 2,000 2D drawing models, to generate over 2,300 construction drawings. Using Bentley’s comprehensive software allowed BWSC to seamlessly incorporate data produced by a widely distributed, multi-disciplined team into a single unified design package. The flexibility and interoperability of Bentley solutions ensured an optimal workflow process enabling BWSC to deliver an accurate, coordinated model on schedule.

Outcome
The flexibility of Bentley’s BIM solution combined with content management capabilities of ProjectWise enabled BWSC to complete the design for all six packages within nine months. The interoperability of Bentley products with non-Bentley software resulted in significant savings compared to previous workflows. Bentley’s integrated modeling environment automated change management processes for the IBCTC models, facilitating the delivery of an accurate, LEED Silver certified design on a tight deadline and within budget.

Software
BWSC used over a dozen Bentley modeling and analysis tools. Using applicable Bentley building products allowed teams to identify and create modules for repetitive areas among the buildings and assemble them into the appropriate master model for each building, enhancing design efficiency and change management. The interoperability of Bentley Building Electrical Systems (now part of AECOsim Building Designer) alone saved an estimated 80 hours designing the facility’s electrical lighting. Bentley’s flexible modeling environment facilitated coordination among disciplines working in different file formats. ProjectWise eliminated file management challenges, saving significant time and reducing rework.
