Project Summary

Barrick Gold Corporation contracted Ausenco to integrate engineering and design drafting processes, gain efficiencies in work processes, standardize on one integrated platform, and eliminate as many manual processes as possible. Ausenco saw this project as an opportunity to develop an integrated approach to automating processes and significantly reduce engineering hours. It proved this approach on Barrick’s Goldstrike complex, located about 60 kilometers northwest of Elko, Nevada.

Using Promis.e’s API, Ausenco developed an intelligent plug-in to assist users by allowing them to select options to setup projects and automate their design process. The customized integrated electrical engineering and design drafting system automatically produced single-line diagrams, schematics, terminations, instrument loop diagrams, cable schedules, and data reports. This enabled the teams to achieve over 95% automation for electrical instrumentation and wiring drawings. The solution integrates data from different sources, applies rules to that data and automatically produces instrumentation and electrical deliverables. This data is then shared with the project through a common AutoPLANT project database.  

The solution has reduced engineering and drafting project hours, ensured a consistent design approach, facilitated more efficient work processes, and produced high-quality deliverables. It is now handling engineering tasks and has reduced 2D drafting time for electrical by 45% and instrumentation by 67%. The complete solution has resulted in a quality engineering and design drafting tool that offers flexible integration into the different Ausenco regions.

Bentley’s Promis.e was a central component in the success of the project. Ausenco’s custom plug links the AutoPLANT suite, including AutoPLANT P&ID, Bentley Instrumentation and Wiring, and Bentley Data Manager with Promis.e. ProjectWise provided the information mobility needed for collaboration across the globe.
