    Restoration of a Recycled Slag Landfill

Astiv Ingeniería needed to design and construct a landfill site and recycling plant using slags from the blast furnace of Zumarraga, which belongs to steel corporation ArcelorMittal. The design had to comply with complex regional environmental regulations specific to the Basque region. This was a unique project, as no slag recycling plant had ever been placed within a completed and finished landfill while complying with environmental regulations. But once the recycling plant began recycling slags, no more slag landfills would need to be constructed.


Solution
Designers were able to develop a recycling center over the completed landfill – and in a way that complied with the strict regional environmental regulations. Using Bentley PowerCivil for Spain, the design team quickly overcame all of the challenges facing the construction of the new landfill and recycling plant.


Outcome
Astiv's engineers used their know-how and Bentley software tools to achieve their goal of designing and building a compliant slag recycling plant over a completed and finished landfill. This was no small challenge, as environmental regulations are very restrictive in the Basque region.
Software
Every change that was required during the construction was easily modified and implemented using PowerCivil tools. Astiv engineers estimated that by using PowerCivil for Spain as an integrated solution for their CAD, survey, site modeling, and other software applications, they were able to reduce design time by 33%.
