KBR Leverages Automated Data Flow between Designer and Client

    Australia

Project Summary

KBR Infrastructure Services Enhances Their Design Capabilities

KBR, a provider of science, technology, and engineering solutions to governments and companies around the world, help their clients accomplish their most critical missions and objectives across the asset and program lifecycle. KBR’s Infrastructure Services business unit recently turned to Bentley as a key global technology provider to help enhance their design engineering capabilities. Through their collaboration with Bentley, KBR now fully meets end-user requirements by streamlining data within ProjectWise Components Center, setting up their clients for future success.

Lack of Data Standardization Increases Work Hours

KBR’s Infrastructure Services business in Australia delivers innovative solutions across the transportation, water, environmental, buildings, defense infrastructure, program management, and construction consultancy markets. After a decade of performing 3D modeling, the business unit accumulated more than 20,000 engineering design objects and scripts stored across multiple locations with thousands of metadata characteristics. Since these objects were not centrally stored, KBR team members often spent several working hours each day locating the correct object or spent time re-working pre-existing objects that couldn’t be found. Because of this lack of standardization, each project handled design objects differently without having a central repository. Therefore, the implementation team needed a way to consolidate and standardize this huge collection of important intellectual property.

Leveraging ProjectWise Components Center

To achieve data consolidation, they implemented Bentley’s ProjectWise Components Center. Through this service, KBR and Bentley created a library that would be accessible on projects in a controlled environment. It would initially be available to select states in Australia, with plans to scale up to the entire business. Moreover, they needed to control object data from a single source of truth for designers working on projects inside KBR and for teams with external contractual arrangements. To meet that goal, KBR created an end-to-end concept solution using the Bentley suite of products included in their E365 agreement and the iTwin.js platform. The new library was embedded into a full web application – independent from, but synchronized to – the live project design. In conjunction with integrated data sets, the library allowed data extraction and automated coding to be realized.

Streamlined Workflows and Better Client Experiences

Housing KBR’s library within the Bentley ecosystem via ProjectWise Components Center allows the interface to grow and ensures the system supports the Internet of Things, various data sets, and asset coding. The solution enables teams to reduce effort during production using verified library data, which can be relied on because of its robust quality assurance and workflows. As digital engineering and software develops, clients may require asset management information to be provided from the design cycle directly to the operator. Over 30 staff members across multiple disciplines have been trained to share KBR libraries with projects and customers, working to build KBR’s foundational data set capability. Plugging in system capabilities when required is a key principle that was used to balance current and future efforts. Concept tests allowed KBR to confirm that live design data extraction could be achieved and used in a variety of ways to fulfill end user requirements. ProjectWise Components Center also allows fully automated data flow between the designer and customer. KBR is now planning to extend its use of ProjectWise Components Center to enhance the productivity of its workflows across all design authoring tools used to meet client needs.

  • “[Establishing] KBR’s Digital Asset Library Australia through the use of ProjectWise Components Center has allowed KBR to amass almost 20,000 engineering and modeling components from all over Australia into one centralized place, easily accessible to everyone in the business. The roll out for use on projects has begun and the transition to new workflows has been a smooth process to date with positive feedback from staff involved.”
