Searching for a 3D Collaborative Design Solution to Improve Collaboration

In Guinan County in the Hainan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, farmers called on authorities to strengthen the area’s grid structure and improve their standard of living. These demands led the prefecture to design a new 2.14 kilometer-long, 110-kilovolt transmission line from Hainan to Tibet at an altitude of 4,000 to 5,000 feet. The new line will connect with two other 110-kilovolt lines from Guide to Guinan and from Guinan to Tongde. The project includes constructing a single-loop corner tower that will connect to the Dayu substation via a double-loop overhead cabling tower. Qinghai Kexin Electric Power Design Institute Co., Ltd. needed to coordinate the design among the multidiscipline project team so that they could prevent delays in the mountainous region by addressing issues before construction started.

Visualizing the Relationship between the Project and Surrounding Area

Qinghai Kexin Electric determined a 3D model would help them gradually implement the right standards and improve quality and productivity. They realized real-time modeling using unmanned aerial vehicles would enable them to visually understand the relationship between the project and the surrounding area, including actual terrain conditions. However, the solution they chose would also have to enable them to optimize cable type selection and accurately reflect the network planning path to avoid underground facilities. To overcome design challenges and strengthen engineering design management, Qinghai Kexin Electric knew they had to search for 3D collaborative design software that would optimize conceptual design, electrical equipment arrangements, distribution room arrangements, and cable laying.

3D Modeling to Understand Actual Terrain Conditions

Although Qinghai Kexin Electric had not used Bentley’s substation software at this altitude, they realized it was the only solution that could help them understand the actual terrain conditions. The 3D model, created with Bentley applications, enabled them to optimize cable type selection and path, and leverage the 3D grounding system design to reflect the grounding network planning path. Moreover, they used the model to design the substation’s main wiring, equipment layout, lighting protection, grounding, and cable system. The results allowed them to verify safety clearances, calculate wire tensions, check data, support dynamic site design, and simulate construction progress. Using Bentley software instead of traditional software methods helped Qinghai Kexin Electric reduce the total landscape amount by 15% and the total building size by 34.5%. Bentley applications also enabled them to reduce the size of the double loop tower by 50% compared to traditional methods.

Reducing Design Time by 50% with Innovative Software

Bentley’s substation solution enabled Qinghai Kexin Electric to significantly improve the design of the power transmission and transformer project. The final assembly of the model allowed the team to detect more than 30 abnormal design points, which reduced the number of change orders during construction. As a result, they completed the design in one month rather than the two months it would have taken using traditional methods. The software also allowed them to reduce the error rate by 90% and enhance the design depth by 50%. Further savings achieved by Qinghai Kexin Electric included eliminating 180 design revision resource days, 90 design review resource days, and 120 on-site handling resource days, leading to a design cost savings of CNY 250,000.
